Knee pain causes

By James Ross at 2010-06-29 03:50:04
There are many types of injuries that cause severe knee pain. If you are an athlete, you are most likely familiar with knee pain resulting from torn ligaments, cartilage, or muscles. The more active you are, the more likely you are to experience knee pain from a sport-related injury. For a torn ligament, meniscal injury, or a completely ruptured tendon, doctors will usually recommend surgery in order to receive permanent knee pain relief.Corticosteroids. When corticosteroids are used as part of your knee pain therapy, they help minimize inflammation, therefore relieving much of the pain. Corticosteroids can be ingested orally, or injected into the site of inflammation. Corticosteroids can offer immediate pain relief; however serious side effects have been confirmed, such as thinning of the cartilage and ligament weakening. Corticosteroids must be used with care.

After a serious knee injury your knee might be sore and you may be unable to walk, move well or carry items. You might have a torn the cushioning cartilage which is called the meniscus. This is actually a C-shaped part of fibro cartilage which is positioned at the peripheral aspect of the joint. The greater part of the meniscus has no blood supply. Hence when damaged due to a knee injury, the meniscus is unable to heal in the regular way.If the knee pain is caused by a minor injury, try ice packs and heating pads. You can also take over-the-counter painkillers, like Tylenol or Advil. However, if the pain is severe and/or lasts for a few days, do not hesitate to visit your doctor. Your doctor can determine the cause of your problem. Only then can the correct treatment routine begin. Some knee injuries require surgery.

Applying extreme temperatures can help you to cure knee pain fast. You can use either ice packs or heat pads. Just apply either the ice pack or the heat pad on your knee cap. If you are undecided on when you apply ice and when heat, consult with your local physician.Generally, people who sit all day will have tight hamstrings, hip flexors, calf muscles, weak gluteus (buttocks) and underactive inner thigh muscles. Please note, other preventable muscle imbalances and joint dysfunction may arise from overuse or a sedentary lifestyle e.g. low back pain, hip drop/hike, neck pain. FYI, when you have tight muscles, its primary functional movement might be altered. For example, tight hamstrings and tight lower back usually signal a weak gluteus muscle.

If you have knee pain and want to find out how to get relief, see a Pilates trained Physical Therapist who will assess your whole body, rather than looking only at your knees. A Pilates exercise program, with a home routine, is a great way to reduce pain and stiffness in your knees, and a 2nd pair of experienced eyes will help you sort out your unique imbalances. Then you'll know exactly what to do for YOUR knees.
