Chronic Wrist Pain

By James Ross at 2010-07-13 02:38:02
Chronic Wrist Pain

For several months I have been experiencing severe hand/wrist pain in both hands. In my work the use of my hands is required continuously for twelve hours a day, three to four days a week; there have been some excruciating days to endure. About three months after the pain began I went through testing, and was consequently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in both wrists. It has been a measure in endurance, as where I work is scheduled to close within the next couple of months, to keep on working through until the closure. The hand is designed more for mobility than stability. It is composed of 27 small bones, muscles and ligaments that allow for a large amount of movement and dexterity, enabling us to perform a multitude of daily activities requiring fine precision and coordination. The two bones of the lower arm, the radius and ulna, meet at the carpal bones of the hand to form the wrist. Unlike the foot the hand does not have a large bone cushioned with a fat pad for bearing weight, When there is not a straight line from your elbow to your fingers, then your wrists are not flat. They are bent, in either a flexed position or an extended position. When the hands are moving downward, they are flexed. When the hands are lifted up, they are extended.

Pain along the thumb (usually of the dominant hand) is another typical pain syndrome seen by chiropractors. This is usually an inflammation of the extensor hallicus longus tendon - translation: inflammation of the tendon that goes to the thumb. This is usually of a chronic nature. Difficulty writing, picking up objects, performing fine motor skills with the thumb can be painful. The joint where the thumb attaches to the hand is the most commonly degenerative joint in the hand. That tells us we use our thumbs a lot.A wrist that has been immobilized may become stiff from lack of use. Some gentle stretching can help restore flexibility. It is recommended pressing on a tabletop with the palm of your hand. Bend your wrist until you reach the angle of pain, then back off just a hair. By riding the edge of discomfort and stopping just before you feel pain, you are doing beneficial stretching.

It is really important if you are going to get the best results to have a clear and tidy place in which to play your guitar. The temperature should be adequate. Your stool or chair should be comfortable and you need to be comfortable in yourself. You need to feel good about this. You should feel stress free and relaxed if you are not you will not enjoy playing. One way of knowing if a pinched nerve is causing your problems is by describing your pain. Do your hands fall asleep? Do your arms, hands or wrists get numb, or tingly? Do your wrists feel like they are being zapped with electrical impulses? These signs can indicate restricted nerves.
