Pilates and Back Pain

By James Ross at 2010-07-30 04:28:31
As Pilates becomes more and more popular the number of people practicing and acquiring injuries has increased as well. This could be due to inexperienced instructors, large class sizes, or overzealous exercisers. When a person begins to do Pilates, he or she has to concentrate on how the different body parts are lined up. This is known as our alignment. When we are standing or sitting, we tend to think of our alignment as our posture. However, having good posture is a dynamic process and depends upon the ability of our body to align all of its different parts to respond to different demands effectively. When stress mounts up, one of the first places that we feel it is around in our back area. Why is this, you ask? It is because our bodies become tense and they do not have a release. The muscles consistently tighten causing ligament tears and misalignment. Your back can throw your whole body out of balance. That is why it is important that you do all that is necessary to take care of it.

Wearing high heels will slowly pull the weight of the entire body forward, thus corrupting the posture and arches of the back. High-heels are the leading cause of Spondylolisthesis which is a forward dislocation of one vertebra over the one beneath it producing pressure on spinal nerves.Pain is a description and not an entity, it is one of the ways our body tells us that something is wrong. Pain increases stress levels which in turn increases the level of cortisol released into the body. Prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream has been shown to have negative effects.Sadly, many people do not realize that strong stomach muscles play a major role in keeping the back healthy. This relationship actually stems from the fact that psoas muscle connects the abdomen and back. It runs from the back of one's spine to the front of the thigh bone. Other muscles that connect the abdomen to the back would be the rectus abdominis, which runs up and down.

Pilates gets its name from Joseph Pilates who originally designed the system in the early 20th century. It is designed to work on the body's core, lengthening, strengthening and improving the flexibility of the core muscles. This can help to both prevent and alleviate back pain. The many Pilates exercise techniques are the answer for those suffering from back related problems. Through regular stretching and undertaking core muscle strengthening exercises, you will be working on the cause of the back pain and reducing significantly the chances of it returning. Pilates is a simple exercise regime to both educate and strengthen the body's core muscles that will result in much greater flexibility, fitness, improved posture and feeling of wellness.
